The Privacy Courtyard

This modern contemporary house was conceived with an semi-urban lot in mind. We placed the master bedroom suite in the front of the building, potentially towards the street. To give it a bit of privacy we gave it narrow privacy courtyard defined by a exposed concrete wall. It is covered by a partly covered trellace. This courtyard is just big enough to comfortably fit a couple of chairs and a small table. If the adjoining rooms are used as a home office or sub-leased rental unit instead of a master suite, this courtyard also serves as a separate entry area. A sliding panel door opens it up toward the large entry courtyard. It is a beautiful Japanese style area, perfect for plantings and getting away. It gives plenty of privacy while letting in filtered light.

The Japanese Lantern

We had some fun with the one-car garage of this house. As its side wall defines part of the entry courtyard, we knew we had to create something special. We ended up with a horizontal wood slat exterior. The pattern of it is randomly alternating between different size boards. This slat siding with its uniform narrow gaps is coupled with translucent corrugated sheets on the inside. As a result daylight finds itself into the garage during the day, while retaining security and privacy. At night, though, when you turn on the lights this part of the building will glow like a Japanese lantern.
Additional we suggest to treat the floor similar to the courtyard, a combination of dark elongated pavers and dark gravel. Towards the courtyard the garage opens up with a large-sized sliding barn door out of the same wooden slats. By opening the barn door, as well as the garage door, the entire space, also due to the flooring, transforms into a gorgeous exterior covered entertainment area. It would also beautifully serve as a studio space for an artist or as wonderful work room.
And all that is created by using standard materials and simple means of construction to insure beauty for an affordable price.

The Roof Terrace

Our contemporary T.1 house offers a large roof terrace. It is a safe and elevated outside entertainment area. One of the upstairs rooms even has its own access to a secluded area of this terrace. The main area is connected to the downstairs by a straight shot and a custom designed modern staircase. Your downstairs entertainment can thus easily spill over to the upstairs, while still being separated to the private bedrooms.
The surface of the roof terrace is a mix between water-resistant hardwood floor boards and riverbed gravel stones. The result is an exterior surface reminiscent of Zen-like Japanese garden designs. The river stone area is skirting the terrace’s perimeter, creating an additional safety measure, as well as an area for plantings.
Together with the entry courtyard, the privacy courtyard, the “Japanese Lantern” garage/entertainment area, and the backyard, you have a great array of exterior spaces of different qualities.
